Some Nigerians living in the United States have reportedly gone into hiding, while others are returning to Nigeria quietly, amid an intensified deportation campaign led by Donald Trump through the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Saturday PUNCH learnt that many immigrants have stopped going to work out of fear, following renewed public backing by President Trump for ICE’s enforcement actions.
The sweeping operation reportedly includes house-to-house raids, triggering widespread panic, protests, and heated debate across several US cities—especially after a series of high-profile deadly incidents involving federal immigration officers.
President Trump kick-started the hardline immigration policy immediately after his inauguration in January 2025, ordering the arrest and removal of undocumented immigrants as part of his administration’s renewed border and internal enforcement strategy.
For many Nigerian families, the development has renewed fears of sudden arrests, separation, and forced return.
