Zamfara State has been thrown into political controversy after a forged APC membership card claiming notorious bandit leader Bello Turji is a party member surfaced online. The card, which shows Turji in a military-style outfit, immediately caught public attention and sparked debates about party credibility and security.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) quickly denounced the card as fake. Spokesman Yusuf Idris described it as a “mischievous attempt by opponents to discredit the ongoing e-registration exercise,” noting obvious errors on the card, including a date code and ID number that belong to Niger State, not Zamfara.
Despite the party’s assurances, citizens expressed concern over how such a bold forgery could emerge. Social media users questioned whether it was the work of internal saboteurs or merely a publicity stunt by political rivals.
Investigations have tentatively linked the card to Babangida Aliyu Shinkafi (Waziri), an associate of Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, who had recently been suspended from the e-registration exercise for alleged irregularities. The card reportedly first appeared on Waziri’s Facebook page.
Idris stressed that Turji, a wanted criminal, could not legally be registered due to the absence of a National Identification Number, and urged the public to ignore the fraudulent card. He also confirmed that security agencies are investigating the matter and promised that those responsible would face prosecution.
Meanwhile, analysts say the incident highlights the growing challenges of political registration in a digital age, where misinformation can spread rapidly, and questions about party vetting processes may persist.
