Man Sentenced to Death for Killing Herdsman

A High Court in Nasarawa State has sentenced a man, Saidu Idi, to death by hanging for the killing of a herdsman in a case that dates back several years.

The judgment was delivered by the court in Lafia, where Saidu Idi was found guilty of armed robbery and culpable homicide in connection with the incident. The court heard that the victim, a herdsman, was attacked, shot and killed before his assailants made away with his money and other valuables.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence linking the defendant to the crime, which the court ruled was strong enough to prove his guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Although he was cleared of the charge of criminal conspiracy, the court held him responsible for the violent killing and robbery.

In delivering the verdict, the judge said the offence was grievous and deserving of the maximum punishment under the law, stressing that the life of the victim was unlawfully taken in cold blood.

The Nasarawa State Government described the judgment as a major step toward strengthening justice and discouraging violent crimes in the state. Officials said the ruling would serve as a warning to criminal elements that the law will take its full course.

However, the defence team for Saidu Idi has indicated plans to appeal the ruling, meaning the case may still go through higher courts.

The judgment has continued to draw attention as part of ongoing efforts to curb insecurity and protect lives and property across the country.
