Actor and filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has spoken candidly about his approach to filmmaking and profitability, making it clear that big box office numbers mean nothing without real personal returns.
Speaking at the launch of his new movie, Afolayan stressed that he is not in competition with anyone in the film industry, but is instead focused on sustainability and fair rewards for his work.
“I don’t want to make any movie for the cinema where it would gross ₦2 billion or ₦1 billion and in the end, I won’t get ₦10 million as my personal income. So there is no competition anywhere,” he said.
According to the filmmaker, chasing headlines, records, or bragging rights is not his priority. What matters most is building a solid business model where the creator is properly rewarded for the value they bring.
His comments have sparked conversations across Nollywood about transparency, profit-sharing, and the true meaning of success in the movie business.
