The Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA) has demanded an urgent investigation into the reported pregnancies of 36 students at Bakisa Secondary School in Webuye, Bungoma County.
The senators, led by nominated Senator Catherine Muma, called for coordinated action by the Ministry of Education, police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to establish the circumstances surrounding the cases and identify those responsible.
According to reports from the school, 13 of the affected girls have already given birth, 13 are currently pregnant, while 10 reportedly dropped out of school after becoming pregnant.
Senator Muma said the cases should not be normalised, while Senator Tabitha Mutinda called for those responsible to be arrested following investigations.
Police and local administrators in Bungoma have already commenced investigations. Webuye East Assistant County Commissioner Emmanuel Kenga said authorities would follow up the cases and pursue those found responsible.
The school management has also appealed for support to construct a dormitory, saying the daily movement of students between their homes and the school may expose them to risks.
The senators said protecting the affected girls, ensuring access to education and healthcare, and bringing any perpetrators to justice should be treated as priorities.
