Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama stepped up to the podium at the 2026 United Nations General Assembly and made his case for African unity, economic self-reliance and global reparations for the transatlantic slave trade.
But before he said a word, his outfit said plenty.
Mahama wore a white agbada with intricate embroidery, paired with a Yoruba-style fila cap. The cap itself was styled from traditional Kente fabric, a deliberate blend of two cultures that have shaped his life.
For anyone who knows his history, the choice was not a fashion statement. It was a homecoming on a global stage.
Mahama's ties to Nigeria run deep. His father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, was a wealthy rice merchant whose business moved between Ghana and Nigeria. On his travels, he met and married a Nigerian woman, Rabiat Igbayilola Aweni Balogun, from Offa in Kwara State. She became Mahama's stepmother and helped raise him.
When political instability struck Ghana — first with the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah in 1966 and again in subsequent coups — Mahama's father fled into exile in Nigeria. After finishing university in Ghana, Mahama moved to join him. He lived in Lagos, Kano and Offa for years. In Offa, he integrated fully into the community, continued his education and learned to speak Yoruba fluently.
His connection to Nigeria was later formalised in tradition. The Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II, conferred on him the chieftaincy title Aare Atolase of Offa Kingdom, because Mahama considers Offa his Nigerian hometown. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, later honoured him as Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source in Ile-Ife.
He frequently calls Nigeria his second home.
