YouTube has announced plans to begin automatically detecting AI-generated content and adding labels to such videos for viewers on the platform.
The Google-owned platform disclosed on Wednesday, May 27, that the new system represents a shift from its previous approach, which mainly relied on creators to voluntarily disclose when generative AI tools were used in making content.
YouTube first introduced AI disclosure guidelines in 2024, requesting that creators flag videos created or altered with generative AI technology. Since then, AI video-generation tools such as Veo 3.1 and Seedance have made it easier to produce highly realistic AI-generated videos.
According to the company, creators who believe their videos were incorrectly labelled will have the opportunity to appeal the decision. YouTube also clarified that the labels will not affect how videos are recommended through its algorithm.
Other platforms, including Spotify, have also begun introducing automatic AI-content labelling systems as AI-generated images, videos, and audio become increasingly common online.
“If a creator doesn’t specify whether or not they used AI, but our systems detect significant photorealistic AI use, we will now automatically apply a label,” YouTube said in a blog post.
