The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly halted issuance of certificates of return to primary winners across Nigeria, following an internal review that could change candidates in select states ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party primary winners have expressed concern over the delay and called for clarity on post-primary administrative processes.
Sources within the party say APC leadership is reassessing the candidacy of certain flagbearers in roughly five states to strengthen its electoral strategy. The review, which comes after screening exercises and primaries, is based on confidential reports, political calculations, and grievances raised by stakeholders.
In Ondo State specifically, the party is moving to consolidate grassroots support by retaining established figures. Alexander Oluremi Ajipe, Kekemeke, and Adegbonmire are reported to be retained as senatorial candidates. The five incumbent House of Representatives members expected to return include Ife Ehindero, Abiola Makinde, Festus Akingbaso, Adefarati Adegboyega, and Donald Ojogo. Meanwhile, four new faces set to emerge for House of Representatives seats are Omowunmi Olatunji-Ohwovoriole, Bukunyi Olagbegi, and Olumuyiwa Daramola.
Across other states, there are numerous peculiarities in the candidate review process as party officials weigh the political consequences of changes against the need to address grievances and ensure stronger electoral prospects. The APC has not made an official announcement on replacements; discussions remain ongoing and a final decision is expected after internal assessments conclude.
