Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of worsening economic hardship and failing to properly use public funds.
According to a report by Daily Trust on Monday, May 18, 2026, speaking during a programme on DCL Hausa, Amaechi said some of the government’s economic reforms may be necessary, but argued that ordinary Nigerians are not benefiting from them. He questioned the removal of fuel subsidy, alleging that the money saved is not being used to improve the lives of citizens.
He also accused state governors of failing to use increased allocations for projects that would help the people. According to him, many governors are more focused on personal gain than development.
Amaechi further expressed concern over government tax policies, saying higher taxes could make it difficult for businesses to survive. He argued that while former President Muhammadu Buhari also borrowed money, visible projects were carried out during his administration.
The former minister said Nigerians deserve to know how funds being borrowed by the current government are being spent.
On his political future, Amaechi said he remains confident about contesting for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress. He added that the South should be allowed to complete its turn in power before the presidency returns to another region.
In his words, "Under Buhari, although loans were borrowed, a lot of projects were executed. But what is Tinubu doing with the money he is borrowing?”
