The management of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has approved the appointment of Dr. Emmanuel Ikwunna Onyema as Acting Director of the University Health Centre.
Dr. Onyema is a seasoned medical practitioner, health administrator, and institutional leader with over 20 years of service at FUTA. He earned his medical degree from the University of Lagos and later obtained a Master of Business Administration from FUTA. He further enhanced his expertise internationally with a Master of Occupational and Environmental Health from Monash University, Australia. Notably, he passed the Australian Medical Council (AMC) examination in a single sitting, qualifying him to practice in Australia and demonstrating a high level of clinical competence.
Within FUTA Health Services, Dr. Onyema has progressed from Medical Officer to Deputy Chief Medical Officer and now serves as Acting Director of Health Services. He has consistently provided leadership in clinical care, healthcare administration, and institutional support, ensuring efficiency and continuity in service delivery.
Beyond his clinical duties, he has contributed significantly to university governance. As a member of the Governing Council of Adekunle Ajasin University, he served on and chaired the Vice Chancellor selection processes, reflecting his leadership capacity and strategic insight.
Dr. Onyema has also demonstrated commitment to institutional development through diverse roles. He served as an Honorary Chess Coach, mentoring students, and played a key role in upgrading facilities at the University Health Centre ahead of the 2005 international conference hosted by FUTA. He also contributed to initiatives such as the resuscitation and commercialization of the University Farms.
His dedication was particularly evident during the West African Universities Games hosted by FUTA, where he served as the sole medical doctor, providing comprehensive healthcare services under demanding conditions.
In addition, Dr. Onyema has been actively involved in public health advocacy. He has held leadership roles in organizations such as the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria and the Coalition Against Cancer in Nigeria, contributing to cancer awareness and education nationwide.
He has also participated in numerous medical outreach programmes across underserved communities in Ondo State and provides annual free healthcare services to young girls through the BEMORE Summer Boot Camp initiative.
Clinically experienced and administratively sound, Dr. Onyema is recognized for his discipline, efficiency, and commitment to quality healthcare delivery. His appointment is expected to ensure stability, innovation, and continued excellence in health services at FUTA.
