Despite FAAN’s multi-million naira investment in high-tech AI security scanners at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, travellers are still facing stressful manual searches allegedly being used to extort passengers.
The scanners, introduced last year to eliminate physical contact and modernise airport security, now operate alongside manual search tables mounted by various agencies within the airport.
According to a BusinessDay investigation, these tables have reportedly become a lucrative system where some officials allegedly harass and exploit travellers under the guise of security checks.
Personnel from the Nigeria Customs Service, NDLEA, ground handling firms and even FAAN staff were named in the report as part of the growing problem.
What should have been a smooth, technology-driven security process has instead turned into what many passengers describe as a chaotic and uncoordinated ordeal.
The development has sparked renewed concerns over accountability, corruption and the true implementation of airport reforms in Nigeria.
