According to a report by Vanguard on Monday, May 11, 2026, reports indicating that former President Goodluck Jonathan may be preparing to re-enter the presidential race ahead of the 2027 elections have triggered widespread debate across Nigeria’s political and socio-cultural landscape.
According to sources, Jonathan is expected to pursue his ambition on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following consultations within his political circle over what they consider a viable route back to the presidency amid rising economic and social challenges in the country.
A senior member of his camp reportedly confirmed that the decision followed extensive deliberations on political structure, electoral strength, and national sentiment. The source added that multiple support groups have already begun mobilising resources to purchase the party’s nomination form, which is reportedly pegged at N100 million.
Among the groups said to be backing the move are diaspora-based organisations, youth coalitions, and regional support structures spread across northern and southern Nigeria. These groups have reportedly pledged to finance the expression of interest and nomination forms ahead of the submission deadline.
However, the development has generated mixed reactions across political and civil society groups.
The PDP leadership is said to have acknowledged that Jonathan had completed his party registration process earlier in the year, a move that has further fuelled speculation about his political intentions.
In contrast, some stakeholders have urged caution, warning that a return to frontline politics could affect the former president’s legacy.
The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere said Jonathan must carefully assess the political environment before making a final decision, noting that internal party tensions and national dynamics could pose significant challenges.
