Parliament has cleared landmark legislation to create a "smoke-free generation" by banning anyone born on or after January 1, 2009 from ever legally purchasing tobacco products.
That means anyone currently aged 17 or younger faces a lifelong ban on buying cigarettes. Not just now, but forever. Even when they turn 30, 40, or 60. The age limit moves with them for the rest of their lives.
The bill passed both Houses with strong majority support and is awaiting Royal Assent. The age restrictions are set to take effect on January 1, 2027. Current smokers are not affected.
Smoking remains the number one preventable cause of death in the UK, responsible for around 80,000 deaths per year. Supporters say this could change that for the next generation.
Critics argue it raises serious questions about personal freedom and government overreach. But the votes showed a clear majority in Parliament backs it.
