The National Association of Nigerian Students has sounded the alarm over the abduction of a student from the University of Jos, John Arum, whose kidnappers are demanding a staggering ₦30 million ransom.
Arum was reportedly seized while travelling to Kaduna, in yet another chilling incident underscoring the growing insecurity across Nigeria.
Outrage intensified after disturbing evidence of his captivity surfaced online, revealing harsh and dehumanising conditions that have sparked widespread anger and concern.
Reacting strongly, NANS President Olushola Oladoja condemned the abduction, describing it as a brutal reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis and the increasing vulnerability of students.
He slammed security agencies and authorities, particularly in Plateau State, for what he called a weak and delayed response, warning that inaction only emboldens criminals.
In a bold move, NANS issued a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding the immediate deployment of security and intelligence resources to secure the student’s safe release, along with regular public updates.
The association also warned that failure to act swiftly could trigger nationwide protests and a shutdown of academic and socio-economic activities.
As tensions rise, the incident has become a flashpoint in the national conversation on insecurity, with mounting pressure on authorities to act decisively before the situation spirals further out of control.
