The Lagos State Butchers Association has raised alarm over the steep rise in cow prices across Lagos, warning that the market is becoming increasingly unaffordable for traders and consumers.
Its patron, Bamidele Kazeem, said cows that sold for about ₦1.7 million last year now go for between ₦2.3 million and ₦2.4 million, with some reaching as high as ₦2.5 million.
He revealed a striking comparison, noting that a car he bought in 2020 for ₦2.1 million is now cheaper than a single cow — a sign of how rapidly livestock prices have outpaced other goods.
According to him, cows that once sold for around ₦1 million have almost disappeared from the market, with prices rising beyond the reach of many buyers.
The association attributed the surge to worsening insecurity affecting cattle movement from northern Nigeria and the sharp increase in fuel prices, which has driven up transportation costs.
