Ibrahim Traoré Pushes Pr!son Reform as He Visits Agricultural Facility

 

Ibrahim Traoré, President of Burkina Faso, has reiterated his commitment to transforming the nation’s pr!son system after a visit to the Baporo Agricultural Penit£ntiary Center (CPAB) in Sanguié Province.

The visit, which took place while the president was en route to Bobo-Dioulasso for the 22nd edition of the National Culture Week, offered a firsthand look at ongoing rehabilitation-focused reforms within the correctional system.

During his inspection, Traoré toured a 40-hectare maize farm cultivated by inmates, highlighting the government’s shift toward int£grating agriculture and vocational training into pr!son l!fe. 

According to the president, pr!sons should not serve merely as det£ntion centers but as environments that promote gro₩th and reint£gration.

“Pr!son must be humane,” Traoré stated, stressing that idle incarc£ration does little to prepare individuals for l!fe after release.

 Instead, inmates are encouraged to engage in productive activities such as farming, skill acqu!sition, and community service programs.

The Baporo fac!lity operates as an open-air agricultural pr!son, where deta!nees actively participate in large-scale farming and livestock act!vities. 

Under the reform policy, inmates can benefit from reduced sentences through labor participation, with reports suggesting that one month of productive work may count as up to three months off a sent£nce.

Officials say the center produced approximately 240 tons of crops in 2025 and is targeting increased output in 2026 as cultivation expands.

The initiative reflects a broader departure from traditional pr!son models—many of which date back to colonial systems—toward a structure that emphasizes rehabil!tation, d!gnity, and national development.

 Programs such as Travaux d’Intérêt Général (community service) are also being introduced to support reint£gration eff0rts.

Supporters of the reform argue that the approach not only improves pr!son cond!tions but also contributes to food security and reduces rep£at off£nses by equ!pping inmates with pract!cal, real-world skills.

Traoré’s latest visit underscores his administration’s focus on reshaping the just!ce system into one that prioritizes rest0ration and productivity over pun!shment al0ne.
