Nigeria’s security partnership with the United States just got real.
At least three US military aircraft touched down between Thursday and Friday across military bases in Borno and other North-East states, delivering ammunition and personnel to support Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insurgency.
According to senior officers at Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, this move follows high-level bilateral talks:
“The American government will not only deploy soldiers but also provide logistics, including ammunition, to fíght insurgents.”
A report from New York Times confirms that one of the aircraft arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State on Thursday night.

By Friday, multiple planes were already on ground, offloading equipment.
A US Department of Defence official added:
“These are the first of many C-17 transport flights headed to three major locations across Nigeria.”
A counter-terrọrísm reporter on X, @mobilisingniger, also shared that a US Air Force C-30J landed at Kaduna International Airport after departing Ghana — hinting that Kaduna may become a training hub for US and Nigerian forces.
Another X user, Brant Philip, who tracks military activity, noted that:
“A C-130J-30 cargo aircraft headed into Northeast Nigeria after leaving Accra. A massive equipment delivery is underway.”
The Nigerian military has yet to release an official statement.

In 2025, former US President Donald Trump threatened to send forces to Nigeria over concerns about attacks on Christians.
That same year, the US military carried out an airstrike on Islamic State fighters in Sokoto on Christmas Day.
Earlier reports indicated that about 200 US officers were expected to be deployed — with some already in the country.
