The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) has matriculated over 8,000 students into its various academic programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.
Speaking at the matriculation ceremony held at the Convocation Ground of the university’s main campus on Thursday, Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi charged the new students to uphold discipline and pursue excellence throughout their academic journey.
Prof. Fawehinmi described the event as a significant milestone in the lives of the new students and a reaffirmation of the university’s mandate to promote national unity and intellectual development.
The V-C revealed that out of more than 30,000 candidates who applied for admission, only a little above 8,000 were offered admission due to capacity constraints and the institution’s commitment to maintaining academic standards.
He said efforts had been intensified since his assumption of office to reposition UNIABUJA to better serve students’ academic and personal development needs.
The don revealed that the management is strengthening strategic partnerships, including collaboration with Galaxy Backbone, to enhance the institution’s ICT infrastructure and improve internet access for teaching, learning and research.
Addressing the challenge of inadequate hostel accommodation, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the university is working with relevant agencies like the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and exploring public-private partnership initiatives to expand and upgrade hostel facilities. He assured parents and guardians that student security remains a top priority.
While congratulating the matriculating students, Prof. Fawehinmi warned that the university maintains zero tolerance for acts of indiscipline, including cultism, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, drug abuse and other forms of antisocial behaviour.
“From today, you have become an integral part of this University, and your conduct will henceforth be subject to public scrutiny. You are therefore expected to conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of this reputable institution of higher learning.
“Let it be clearly understood that the University has zero tolerance for acts of indiscipline, including cultism, examination misconduct, sexual harassment, drug abuse, unruly behaviour and other forms of antisocial conduct. Ignorance of the rules will not be accepted as an excuse,” he cautioned, urging the students to honour their matriculation oath and remember that the certificate they would earn is rooted in both character and learning.
