Dr. Leloonu Nwibubasa, a former Rivers State commissioner, has accused FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of causing and benefiting from political crises in Rivers State over the years.
He said Wike used conflicts in the past to rise to power and continue influencing politics in the state, including during the 2014–2015 period and recent elections.
According to a report by Arise News on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Nwibubasa criticized President Bola Tinubu for supporting Wike as a key political leader in Rivers State. He described the president’s actions as inappropriate because, in a true democracy, leaders of one party should not interfere with another party’s leadership.
Nwibubasa also said that President Tinubu’s involvement shows a focus on politics and control rather than solving problems like insecurity, corruption, and poor governance.
According to Nwibubasa, Rivers State Governor Siminal Fubara has lost the trust of the people. He explained that residents want a governor who will provide jobs, clean streets, and ensure basic services rather than being influenced by powerful politicians.
The former commissioner expressed concern about the state of Rivers, saying that Port Harcourt streets are filled with garbage, schools are not functioning well, and the state treasury is at risk.
He warned that Wike’s influence over local politics, combined with the president’s endorsement, sets a bad example and distracts from the real issues affecting the people.
In his words, "He has added salt to injury by saying that a sitting governor must always defer to his Minister, who as of today, we don’t even know whether Min. Nyesom Wike is a member of the APC or PDP.
