Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has shared a story from his time as a student leader at the University of Lagos, explaining why he rejected an expensive gift allegedly intended for Student Union leaders.
During an interview with AF24 News, Sowore spoke about how student activism has changed over the years. He said that even in his time, some student leaders secretly worked with people in government.
He recalled that a brand new 505, which was considered a luxury car at the time, was brought to him. The messenger reportedly said the car was sent at the instruction of former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida to be given to Student Union leaders.
Sowore said he refused to accept the car because he believed student leaders should not collect gifts from those in power. He warned that if students discovered such an arrangement, it could lead to serious backlash.
According to him, some leaders rejected such offers, while others accepted them. He stressed that without strong principles, leaders can easily be influenced.
Sowore added that many student movements today no longer have a strong moral direction, saying activism has become more about personal benefit than fighting injustice.
