Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has released ₦1 billion for the 2026 Ramadan Feeding Programme, with plans to increase the number of feeding centres across the state from 155 to 170.
The expanded programme is expected to provide approximately 34,000 meals daily to vulnerable residents during the holy month, representing a significant increase from previous years.
Governor Aliyu made the announcement during a stakeholders' meeting at the Government House in Sokoto on Saturday, emphasising his administration's commitment to social welfare and support for the less privileged.
"We are determined to ensure that no one goes hungry during Ramadan," the governor said. "This programme is not just about providing food; it is about showing compassion and strengthening the bonds within our communities."
He assured residents that strict quality control measures would be implemented to guarantee that all meals served at the feeding centres are hygienic, well-packaged, and of high quality.
"Our people deserve nothing but the best," Governor Aliyu stated. "We have put in place mechanisms to ensure proper monitoring and supervision of all feeding centres to maintain the highest standards."
The additional 15 feeding centres will be strategically located in underserved areas to ensure wider coverage and accessibility for vulnerable groups, including widows, orphans, the elderly, and displaced persons.
Religious leaders and civil society organisations have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that will ease the burden on struggling families during the fasting period.
Malam Ibrahim Danmusa, Chairman of the Sokoto Council of Ulama, praised the governor for prioritising the welfare of citizens. "This is the kind of leadership we need—one that remembers the poor and vulnerable," he said.
The state government has also directed all local government chairmen to work closely with community leaders to identify beneficiaries and ensure smooth implementation of the programme.
Ramadan is expected to commence in late February or early March, depending on the sighting of the moon. The feeding programme will run throughout the holy month across all 23 local government areas of the state.
