In 1960, Alaiyeluwa Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona CFR, the revered Awujale of Ijebu-Land, formally took his oath of office, marking the official commencement of his long and influential reign. This historic moment was witnessed by prominent figures of the time, including Oba Adesoji Aderemi, the Ooni of Ife, who was 30 years into his reign, and Chief S.L. Akintola, the newly appointed Governor of the Western Region of Nigeria.
The ceremony highlighted the deep ties between Yoruba monarchs and the political leadership of the era, reflecting both traditional authority and modern governance. Oba Adetona’s ascendancy to the throne would go on to become one of the longest reigns in Yoruba history, with his leadership spanning decades and influencing the social, cultural, and political development of Ijebu-Land.
The event stands as a testament to the enduring role of Yoruba traditional institutions in the post-independence era, symbolising continuity, stability, and the interplay between cultural heritage and contemporary governance.
