"Nigerians Are Not Fools" – Okutepa SAN Dismantles Excuse That Hardship Isn't Tinubu's Fault

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Jibrin Samuel Okutepa SAN, has strongly criticized Nigeria’s political leadership for blaming the country’s current hardship on past governments, accusing them of insulting Nigerians’ intelligence.

In a blunt statement gaining traction online, Okutepa said many of those currently in power were key actors in previous administrations and cannot distance themselves from the consequences Nigerians are facing today.

He questioned attempts to shift responsibility, pointing out that Nigeria’s leadership since 1999 has largely consisted of the same political class, many of whom have held powerful positions across different administrations and parties.

“Show me who amongst the leadership in power now who was not part of past governments,” he said, dismissing the excuses with the remark, “Tell these stories to the marine.”

Okutepa said Nigerians continue to suffer from poor electricity, insecurity, weak institutions, and declining living standards despite decades of promises and political transitions.

He argued that both past and present leaders share responsibility for the country’s condition, stressing that accountability not excuses is what Nigerians deserve.

He also called for the recovery of stolen public funds and their redirection toward improving security, infrastructure, and citizens’ welfare, warning that continued blame-shifting will not solve Nigeria’s deepening crisis.
