The Edo State Government has commenced full enforcement to decongest Ring Road in Benin City, restricting commercial vehicles from loading and offloading passengers in the area to restore order and improve traffic flow.
The enforcement exercise, which began at major flashpoints around Ring Road and the Central Park, is being led by the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Uwuilekhue Saturday Idehen (JP), in collaboration with officials of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA), the Edo State Task Force, and the Inter-Ministerial Enforcement Committee.
Under the directive, commercial vehicle operators are required to pick up and drop off passengers strictly at the Central Park, in line with existing government policies aimed at easing congestion and enhancing public safety within the city centre.
During the operation, the Commissioner and members of the enforcement team conducted on-the-spot assessments, trekking through Ring Road, the Central Park, and adjoining flashpoints to monitor compliance while engaging transport operators and members of the public.
Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Idehen said enforcement was fully in force and urged commercial drivers to comply with all transportation regulations, including operating only from designated parks and adhering to the approved vehicle colour code.
He explained that the initiative is designed to promote orderliness, improve traffic management, and ensure the safety of road users, stressing that sustained enforcement and public cooperation are critical to achieving lasting results.
The Commissioner further assured residents of the state government’s commitment to building a structured, secure, and efficient transportation system, adding that sensitisation efforts would continue alongside enforcement to ensure full compliance across Benin City.
