Chinko Ekun: The Rise of Nigeria’s Energetic Hip-Hop Star

Oladipo Olamide Emmanuel, popularly known as Chinko Ekun, is a Nigerian rapper and songwriter celebrated for his high-energy performances and a unique blend of Yoruba, Pidgin, and English in his music. Born on 13 September 1993 in Ikeja, Lagos State, he has carved a niche in Nigeria’s hip-hop scene through a combination of street-smart lyrics and infectious rhythms.

Early Life and Education

Chinko Ekun grew up as the second child in a family of three, and though a native of Ikare, Ondo State, he spent his formative years in Lagos. He attended Blessing Nursery and Primary School and later Remade Nursery and Primary School, both in Lagos, before moving on to Baptist Model High School in Ijegun for his secondary education.
Following secondary school, he pursued a Law degree at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and subsequently completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in Lagos, balancing academics with a growing interest in music.

Career Journey

Chinko Ekun began his music career in 2011, posting freestyle videos on Instagram, showcasing his lyrical dexterity and street style. He gained wider attention in 2013 with his track “Ekun” and later featured on Olamide’s Street OT album (2014), contributing to hits like “100 to Million,” “Bang,” and “Usain Bolt.” His stage name, “Chinko Ekun,” originated from university days—friends jokingly said he resembled a Chinese person (“Chinko”), and his debut track “Ekun” means “tiger” in Yoruba, reflecting his fierce style.
In 2015, he signed with YBNL Nation, Olamide’s record label, releasing his debut singles “Alejo Oran” and “Emi Na Re.” After leaving YBNL, he joined Dek-Niyor Entertainment, a Dubai-based label, in 2017. His 2018 hit “Able God”, featuring Zlatan and Lil Kesh, brought him widespread acclaim, earning the Headies Award for Best Street Hop Artiste and multiple accolades at the 2019 City People Music Awards.
