The Catholic Church in Nigeria is thrown into deep mourning following the tragic and horrific killing of Rev. Fr. David Tanko, a Catholic priest of the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo, who was ordained in 2008.
According to confirmed reports, Rev. Fr. David Tanko was burnt alive inside his vehicle by armed bandits at Kufai Amadu, Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State. His body was reportedly burnt beyond recognition.
At the time of the attack, the priest was on a peace mission, traveling to a meeting aimed at mediating and reconciling the Tiv and Jukun tribes, demonstrating his pastoral commitment to peace, unity, and reconciliation.
Eyewitnesses and residents of the area have described his death as that of a martyr of the Church—a faithful servant who offered his life to God and to His people. His sacrifice stands as a painful reminder of the rising insecurity and persecution faced by ministers of the Gospel and innocent citizens.
Indeed, the blood of the martyrs remains a powerful seed of the Christian faith.
