U.S., Nigeria Launch First-Ever Working Group on Security, Religious Freedom

Senior officials from the United States and Nigeria have launched the first-ever U.S.–Nigeria Working Group, marking a new phase of bilateral cooperation on security and human rights.

The initiative was unveiled on Tuesday as Lt. Gen. John Brennan joined senior leaders from the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Mission in Nigeria. The working group is designed to serve as a mechanism for action, accountability, and coordination following Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern under the International Religious Freedom Act.

U.S. Africa Command said the engagement represents a significant step toward strengthening cooperation between both countries, particularly in efforts to counter terrorism and protect vulnerable and disadvantaged communities.
