The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined the Algerian Football Federation a total of $100,000 following misconduct by its players, officials, and supporters after their AFCON 2025 quarter-final match against Nigeria.
Nigeria defeated Algeria 2–0 in the match played in Morocco. However, moments after the final whistle, the game turned ugly as Algerian players and officials openly confronted the match referees.
The situation quickly became tense, leading to a heated clash on the pitch. Some Nigerian players were also caught in the chaos as referees had to be rushed away for safety. Reports said the unrest later spread to the technical area, where pushing and physical attacks were seen.
CAF’s disciplinary panel said the actions brought embarrassment to African football.
As punishment:
Algeria was fined $25,000 for poor conduct by players and officials
Another $15,000 was added for too many yellow cards and crowd trouble.
An extra $60,000 fine was imposed for offensive actions by supporters and security breaches
CAF also suspended Algerian players Rafik Belghali for four matches and Luca Zidane for two matches due to their involvement in the post-match incident.
The Algerian Football Federation has confirmed it will appeal the sanctions.
