All eyes are on Ibadan, Oyo State, as over 3,000 delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepare to gather for the party’s national elective convention slated for November 15–16, 2025.
However, mounting tension and internal power struggles threaten to overshadow the event, with the party sharply divided into two rival camps.
On one side is the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC), backed by the PDP Governors’ Forum, the Board of Trustees, and State Chairmen. On the other side is the Nyesom Wike faction, which has formed a parallel leadership and continues to assert strong influence despite being outnumbered.
The crisis deepened following a court ruling by Justice James Omotosho, which restrained the PDP leadership from proceeding with the convention and barred INEC from monitoring it, citing procedural breaches in the party’s notification process.
In response, the Damagum-led NWC suspended Senator Samuel Anyanwu (National Secretary), Kamaldeen Ajibade (National Legal Adviser), and Umar Bature (National Organising Secretary) for alleged anti-party activities.
Barely 24 hours later, Anyanwu’s faction retaliated, announcing the suspension of Damagum and the entire NWC, escalating the leadership tussle to new heights.
With both factions digging in, uncertainty looms large over whether the much-anticipated convention will hold — or collapse under the weight of internal division.
