A peaceful Sunday morning at the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin City turned into pandemonium when armed thugs allegedly stormed a private exhibition, disrupting an event attended by investors, artists, and foreign envoys from the EU, France, and Denmark.
Eyewitnesses report that the mob, claiming the museum “belonged to the Oba of Benin,” wielded weapons, assaulted attendees, and damaged property, attempting to breach the secure area where guests were seated.
Security personnel and event organizers acted quickly to protect the guests and contain the chaos, allowing authorities to intervene. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, but the brazen nature of the attack has sparked serious concerns about security and the protection of cultural institutions in Edo State.
