According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, October 1, 2026, Yunusa Tanko has announced his acceptance of a new appointment as Political Adviser, Northern Nigeria, to Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tanko made this known in a statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, October 1, 2026, explaining that his new responsibility would focus on political engagement, mobilisation and coordination across Northern Nigeria.
The development comes after Tanko spent two years as National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement. Reflecting on his tenure, he said the movement established structures across the country during the period.
