Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his willingness to organise elections in Ukraine if Russian President Vladimir Putin agrees to suspend military operations for 60 days, according to a report by Sky News on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
During a recent interview with ABC, Zelenskyy appealed to the Russian leader to approve a two-month ceasefire, explaining that the temporary pause would enable Ukrainian authorities to prepare for an electoral process despite the ongoing conflict.
"Please tell Putin, give us two months, 60 days of total ceasefire, 60 days, and we will organise elections," he told ABC.
The Ukrainian president's proposal reflects his longstanding argument that conducting elections during wartime would require a substantial improvement in security conditions. He previously presented a similar position in February during an interview with Axios, where he also identified a 60-day ceasefire as necessary for organising the vote.
Zelenskyy's latest appeal highlights the difficulties facing Ukraine as it considers holding elections while Russian military operations continue. According to his position, a temporary end to hostilities would give election officials sufficient time to prepare voting arrangements without the constant danger associated with ongoing attacks.
However, the proposed arrangement would depend on Russia's willingness to halt its military activities for the requested period. Zelenskyy's statement did not suggest that Putin had accepted the proposal or that both countries had reached an agreement on implementing the ceasefire.
The question of elections remains an important issue in Ukraine, where the prolonged war has created serious security and administrative challenges. Arranging a nationwide vote would require authorities to address concerns involving voter safety, access to polling stations and participation in areas affected by the fighting.
A temporary truce could potentially provide an opportunity to address some of these obstacles, although the practical requirements for conducting elections would remain considerable.
By renewing his call for a 60-day ceasefire, Zelenskyy has reiterated that improved security conditions are central to his proposal for organising elections while the war with Russia continues.
