A traditionalist and high chief has been killed in an accidental discharge during a traditional funeral ceremony at Ayeka, in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, while the deceased’s colleagues were performing traditional funeral rites for him.
According to an eyewitness, tension erupted at the ceremony when a yet-to-be-identified person carrying a firearm suddenly discharged it, with the bullet striking the high chief in the head and killing him instantly.
Some residents who witnessed the incident described the shooting as an accidental discharge.
The spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, stating that one suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident.
Jimoh added that a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting had commenced.
