Norte Fire Explodes To 465 Acres In Orange County, Destroying Homes As Santa Ana winds Push Flames Into Neighborhoods

Residents in San Clemente watched a wall of fire race across the hillsides behind their homes on Friday as thick smoke swallowed the sky. The Norte Fire, driven by powerful Santa Ana winds, started near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte around 11:30 a.m. and tore through vegetation and into suburban neighborhoods straddling San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

By early afternoon the blaze had surged past 250 acres. Officials later confirmed it at 465 acres with zero percent containment. At least six homes were damaged or destroyed, most in San Juan Capistrano, including four off Via La Mirada. Aerial footage showed flames punching through roofs of large homes while others faced direct threats from advancing fire.

Orange County Fire Authority Division 3 Fire Chief Mark Backoff and crews reported the rapid growth and structural losses. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. No civilian injuries were reported. More than 500 firefighters attacked the fire from the ground and air, including retardant drops from air tankers and water drops from helicopters.

Mandatory evacuation orders covered San Clemente zones SCL12 and SCL13 plus San Juan Capistrano zones SJC04, SJC05, and SJC10. Shelters opened at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center and the San Clemente Community Center. Capistrano Unified schools dismissed students early, and high school football games were canceled.

One resident packing up his children said he could see the fire from his location as orders spread. Homeowner Mark McNabb, whose San Juan Capistrano house of ten years was lost, stated: “We just installed a fireproof roof and boxed in the eaves.” Officials repeatedly ordered: “If you are in one of these zones, leave immediately.”

The cause remains under investigation. Santa Ana winds, dry fuels, and steep terrain turned a morning brush fire into a fast-moving threat that reached backyards within hours. Local crews responded aggressively from the start, containing what could have been far wider losses despite the conditions. Families who lost homes face the hard work of recovery. Those still under orders need to stay clear until authorities lift them. Firefighters remain on the lines against the wind.
