Nigerian social commentator Oyemykke has sparked debate online after comparing the cost of living in Lagos with that of London, claiming that residents of the Nigerian city can spend more on lifestyle expenses than people living in the UK capital.
Oyemykke made the claim in a video shared on his Instagram page while discussing his experience living in the United Kingdom.
According to Oyemykke, accommodation remains one of the biggest financial challenges for residents of London because of the high cost of rent.
However, he argued that several other everyday expenses, including food and chicken, are relatively affordable compared with what residents may spend in Lagos.
He said:
> “Lagos is more expensive to live than London, don’t let anyone deceive you. You’ll spend more money in Lagos on your lifestyle than you will spend here in London.
> The only problem we have here is accommodation, rent is stupendously expensive, but aside that every other thing is affordable. Chicken is cheap, food is cheap. Lagos is very much expensive than UK like crazy, don’t let anyone tell you perhaps, especially Lagos Island,” he said.
Oyemykke’s comparison has generated reactions online, with social media users debating the differences between living expenses in Lagos and London.
While his comments focused largely on lifestyle and everyday spending, the comparison has also drawn attention to the different ways rent, food, transportation and other expenses affect residents in both cities.
His remarks have consequently reignited discussions about the realities of living in Lagos compared with major cities in the United Kingdom.
