Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has said he has been unable to reach his successor, Governor Hyacinth Alia, since their last meeting before the swearing-in, despite making several attempts to call him.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Ortom made this known when he was asked whether his efforts to see the governor had been rebuffed. He confirmed that he met with Alia before May 29 and handed over notes to aid the transition.
He said that during that meeting he told Alia that power comes from God and that although he did not support his emergence, he had accepted the outcome.
He pledged to make himself available to offer advice or support to help Governor Alia build a Benue that everyone would be proud of and asked the governor to reach out if there were questions about the handover notes or if his input was needed. Ortom emphasized that his intention was to contribute to the development of the state and ensure continuity.
In his statement, "Since he became governor before swearing in, I met with him. I told him I'm giving you my hand in over notes. Build up to 2023, the election was heated, but you won, and I told him that power belongs to God and he giveth it to whosoever he wills."
"I didn't want you to be governor, but you're governor today. I have subjected myself. On May 29, you'll be governor; I will be a former governor. If you have issues with my hand in over notes, ask me."
"If you want anything from me to contribute so that together we can build a state that everybody will be proud of, we'll be there. I have done that. Since that meeting till today, my governor has not picked my call. I've called him several times."
