During a recent vacation between Nigeria and the neighboring Benin Republic, a Black American woman who claims to have lived in Nigeria for the past three years expressed frustration about the differences she observed.
In an online video, the woman stated that she was unable to fully enjoy her trip because it forced her to consider what she believes Nigeria is capable of accomplishing.
She noted that cameras are used to keep an eye on speeding drivers and commended the Benin Republic for its well-kept streets, orderly surroundings, operational systems, and road infrastructure.
She was particularly impressed with the level of organization and accessibility beyond major cities and into rural areas.
She claimed that the encounter made her wonder if accessibility or infrastructure problems were the only causes of some of Nigeria's problems.
“Everything that Benin has that is working, Nigeria could have,” she said, adding that she was frustrated by what she described as the contrast between the two countries.
The woman also said that the environment gave people a sense of dignity and praised the way she believed citizens were treated in the Benin Republic.
“Nigeria won't even get 10% of this,” she said.
She concluded by saying the experience had left her “so sick” and frustrated rather than allowing her to fully enjoy her vacation.
