Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will resign from his position if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to secure victory in both the FCT and Rivers State during the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the declaration while addressing members of the Apo Traders Association in Abuja, where he spoke about his support for Tinubu and his responsibility as the minister in charge of the nation’s capital.
Wike says FCT and Rivers are his responsibility
The minister noted that support for Tinubu extends beyond members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members are also backing the President.
“I’ll tell you one thing about this place. We are doing rainbow coalition. Even people in the PDP, we are supporting Tinubu, right?” Wike said.
Explaining his position, Wike described the FCT as his place of work while identifying Rivers State as his home state. He argued that failing to deliver support for Tinubu in either territory would amount to a personal failure.
“You see, FCT is where I work. Rivers State is my state, right? And if I cannot deliver where I work, then I am not worthy to be here,” he said.
According to Wike, losing either the FCT or Rivers State would indicate that residents were dissatisfied with his performance as minister and could raise questions about his continued stay in office.
“It means that whatever I am doing here, people don’t think that I’m doing the right thing. And even if I was here, I shouldn’t be in that position,” he added.
Wike announces proposed resignation date
Wike said he was prepared to take personal responsibility for the outcome of the 2027 presidential election in both territories.
He stated that the presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, and pledged to announce his resignation the following day if Tinubu loses both the FCT and Rivers State.
“I’m a practical person. The presidential election is on January 16, 2027. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said.
The declaration places the minister’s continued tenure in office on the electoral performance of President Tinubu in the two territories, with Wike publicly committing to resign if the President fails to win both areas.
