ISTANBUL, Turkey – Former Besiktas midfielder Sinan Engin has urged Turkish champions Galatasaray to handle Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen with extreme care, describing the Super Eagles star as a “precious gem.”
Engin's comments come amid growing concerns over Osimhen's fitness after the Nigerian forward was forced off during Galatasaray's 3-2 victory over Basaksehir FK on Friday.
Osimhen, who has enjoyed an explosive start to the season with six goals and two assists in just four matches, reportedly suffered a suspected groin injury during the first half of the encounter.
The injury scare has raised concerns ahead of Galatasaray's UEFA Champions League clash against Sporting CP.
Speaking on the Asist Analiz YouTube channel, Engin stressed that Galatasaray's fortunes could be heavily affected by how the club manages its star striker.
“Galatasaray without Osimhen is like a vehicle running on gas,” Engin said, using an analogy to emphasise the Nigerian's importance to the team.
He warned that the club must protect and properly manage Osimhen throughout the demanding season.
“Galatasaray must treat Osimhen as if he were a precious gem,” the former Besiktas star added.
Osimhen is expected to undergo an MRI scan before Galatasaray's scheduled trip to Portugal on Wednesday, where medical tests will determine the full extent of the injury.
The Nigerian international's availability for the crucial Champions League fixture will depend on the outcome of the medical assessment.
