There are moments in the life of a nation when the calendar does more than mark the passage of time; it furnishes history with an occasion to pause, reflect and acknowledge the consequential footprints of men whose service has transcended the ordinary parameters of public office. The birthday of His Excellency, Senator Kashim Shettima, Vice-President and constitutional number two citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, presents precisely such an occasion.
As His Excellency marks another year of life and service today, I celebrate him not merely as the occupant of one of the highest constitutional offices in our Republic but as a statesman whose political influence, intellectual sophistication, strategic sagacity and extraordinary humaneness have continued to command respect across the political spectrum. For me, however, this celebration bears a dimension considerably more profound. Senator Kashim Shettima is, in the truest sense of the expression, a father, mentor, role model and political godfather whose interventions in my journey have acquired an enduring place in my personal and political history.
In the theatre of politics, where alliances are frequently subjected to the imperatives of expediency and where commitments are sometimes calibrated according to immediate political utility, His Excellency has distinguished himself by demonstrating that authentic political mentorship is not a transactional enterprise. He has repeatedly shown that leadership carries with it a moral obligation to identify, encourage and empower younger generations of Nigerians whose aspirations are directed towards public service. I am a direct beneficiary of that philosophy.
His Excellency was there when it mattered most. At critical junctures when political uncertainty could have extinguished legitimate aspirations, his counsel, encouragement and intervention supplied the reassurance that comes from knowing that one is not navigating the political terrain alone. His support has extended beyond the ceremonial or rhetorical. It has manifested in tangible political, intellectual, spiritual, economic and fatherly dimensions, thereby establishing a relationship founded not upon convenience but upon confidence, loyalty and enduring human fellowship.
My gratitude is particularly profound in respect of His Excellency's remarkable contribution to my political journey before and during the primary election of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State. His intervention at that critical period cannot, in my considered estimation, be reduced to the ordinary vocabulary of political endorsement. It represented an extraordinary demonstration of faith in a younger political actor and an affirmation of the principle that political leadership must sometimes open the door for emerging voices to participate meaningfully in the governance of their communities. That gesture remains indelible.
Indeed, if political mentorship were to be subjected to the rigorous test of evidence, consistency and demonstrable impact, His Excellency's record would withstand such scrutiny. His contribution to my emergence and political progression constitutes compelling evidence of a leader who does not merely speak about empowerment but practises it; who does not merely celebrate young people but deliberately creates conditions in which their aspirations can acquire institutional expression.
There is, therefore, a profound jurisprudential lesson in Senator Shettima's approach to leadership: power finds its highest justification when it becomes an instrument for the advancement of others. Public authority, properly exercised, is not an entitlement to personal aggrandisement; it is a fiduciary responsibility entrusted to the holder for the advancement of the common good. By the measure of that principle, Senator Shettima has demonstrated an appreciable understanding of the ethical obligations that accompany political authority.
His trajectory from the governorship of Borno State to the Vice-Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is itself a. compelling testament to political resilience, intellectual capacity and administrative experience. His public life has traversed some of the most demanding theatres of Nigerian governance, providing him with a rare appreciation of the complexities inherent in managing a plural, populous and politically sophisticated federation.
As Vice-President, His Excellency has brought to the Presidency an unusual combination of political dexterity, economic consciousness, institutional experience, rhetorical force and intellectual depth. His role within the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has placed him at the centre of several critical national conversations, where the imperatives of economic transformation, investment, employment, human capital development, national cohesion and institutional reform demand not only political authority but analytical competence and strategic foresight. But the office does not fully define the man.
Beyond the constitutional insignia, official protocol and grandeur associated with the Vice-Presidency lies a man whose greatest political asset may well be his capacity to recognise human potential. He possesses that increasingly rare quality of leadership which enables a senior statesman to look beyond the immediate hierarchy of political office and identify the promise in those coming behind.
That quality is particularly significant in a democracy such as Nigeria's, where the sustainability of political institutions depends substantially upon the deliberate cultivation of a new generation of competent, patriotic and public-spirited leaders.
Your Excellency, I consider myself privileged to have been the recipient of your fatherly affection, political counsel and confidence. Your mentorship has taught me that political ambition without character is an empty vessel; that public service without accountability is a betrayal of public trust; and that leadership without compassion ultimately forfeits its moral authority.
You have also demonstrated, by example, that the gravitas of a statesman is not measured by the volume of his entourage, the splendour of his office or the magnitude of his political influence but by the quality of lives that become better because he passed through their history.
On this auspicious anniversary of your birth, therefore, I do not merely extend felicitations. I place on public record my profound appreciation for a man whose benevolence, mentorship and intervention have contributed significantly to my political journey. Whatever words I deploy, however elaborate their diction or elevated their register, remain insufficient to exhaust the depth of my gratitude.
I celebrate the father who provides direction; the mentor who imparts wisdom; the political strategist whose counsel carries considerable weight; the statesman whose influence extends beyond geographical and partisan boundaries; and the humanist who understands that the most enduring monument a leader can erect is the number of worthy destinies he helps to nurture.
I pray that Almighty God, in His infinite mercy, will enlarge your capacity for service, strengthen you against the vicissitudes attendant upon high public office and grant you the discernment, courage and fortitude required to continue contributing to the advancement of our dear nation.
