Nigerian students delivered an exceptional performance at the 2026 Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC), winning multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals, with two students ranking among the world's top 10 in one of the most prestigious mathematics competitions globally.
Leading the charge was Agu Chukwuka of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State, who secured two gold medals and one bronze across the Olympiad Contest, Math Warriors, and Math Master Mind events. His performance earned him 8th place globally in the Grade 7 category. Okpere-Udo Hallel of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, finished 2nd in the world in the Grade 10 Olympiad Contest, winning one gold and one bronze.
Other top performers included Nwawulu Chimgozirim Kevin of Grundtvig International, who won gold in the Lower Secondary Math Master Mind; and Stanley Iduate Samson of Graceland International and Adepetu Mofopefoluwa Oluwasemilore of Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School, Port Harcourt, who both won gold in the Upper Secondary division. Several other Nigerian students earned silver, bronze, and honourable mentions.
The competition, held in Singapore from July 17 to 21, brought together about 2,285 students from 40 countries and 1,113 schools, testing participants in advanced mathematics, logical reasoning, and critical thinking.
Organisers said Nigeria's strong showing highlights the country's growing potential in STEM education and proves that Nigerian students can compete with the best young mathematicians worldwide.
