Beyond its annual N100 billion allocation for Constituency Projects (Zonal Intervention Projects) since 1999, the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has secured an additional N2.33 trillion in the 2026 Federal Budget:
📍 7,403 Federal Constituency Projects - N1.43trn
📍 3,828 Senatorial District Projects - N893.48bn
That's 11,231 projects worth N2.33 trillion, representing over 30% of all projects contained in the 2026 Federal Budget.
To put this in perspective, this allocation is almost at par with the entire federal budget for either the Education or Health sector.
This raises important questions:
❓ How were these projects selected and prioritized?
❓ Under what agencies would they be implemented?
❓ How can citizens track over 11,000 projects across the country?
❓ What measures are in place to prevent waste, duplication, and political patronage?
Constituency projects can drive grassroots development when they are transparent, needs-based, and properly implemented. However, an allocation of N2.33 trillion requires an equally strong commitment to openness and accountability.
At a time when Nigeria is borrowing heavily to finance its budget, every naira must be traceable, justifiable, and targeted at delivering real value to citizens.
Public funds should serve public needs, not political interests.
