Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he has "no apology whatsoever" for opposing former President Olusegun Obasanjo's controversial third-term bid, saying he chose to defend Nigeria's Constitution and democracy over personal loyalty.
Atiku's response followed Obasanjo's recent remark that choosing him as his running mate in the 1999 election was the biggest political mistake of his career. In a statement issued by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described Obasanjo's comments as another attempt to rewrite history.
He maintained that resisting the third-term agenda remains one of the proudest decisions of his political career, insisting that "no individual is bigger than the Federal Republic of Nigeria." According to Atiku, the battle was about preserving constitutional democracy for future generations, not a personal dispute with Obasanjo.
Atiku also recalled supporting Obasanjo during his imprisonment and playing a key role in his return to power, adding that while he does not regret helping the former president, history should not be distorted.
