Alwan Hassan has emphasized that outstanding academic qualifications do not automatically translate into workplace competence, revealing that he often recruits highly accomplished university graduates but still has to train them extensively after they are employed.
Hassan made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television, while discussing the relationship between education, practical experience, and professional performance.
During the interview, Hassan argued that academic success should not be viewed as the only measure of a person's ability to excel in the workplace or in leadership.
According to him, many graduates leave university with impressive academic records but still require practical guidance and real-world experience before they can effectively perform their duties in a professional environment.
Sharing his personal experience as an employer, Hassan stated, "I employ people that are better than me, first-class graduates, and I have to teach them the job."
He explained that despite hiring individuals with exceptional academic achievements, he still invests time and effort in mentoring them because classroom learning alone does not always prepare people for the practical demands of the workplace.
Hassan maintained that practical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability are qualities that often develop through hands-on experience rather than through academic study alone.
He suggested that employers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in universities and the realities of professional life.
According to him, many organisations expect new employees to undergo training before they become fully productive, regardless of the class of degree they obtained.
He argued that this reality demonstrates that academic excellence should be complemented by continuous learning, workplace exposure, and the willingness to develop new skills throughout one's career.
