According to a report by Fox News on Sunday, August 2, 2026, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Iranian government has faced a different approach under President Donald Trump compared with previous American administrations.
Rubio argued that Iran had become accustomed to years of limited consequences before Trump’s policies altered the situation.
Speaking about the administration’s strategy, Rubio said, “I don’t think the Iranian regime has ever faced a president like President Trump.”
He maintained that Iran had experienced decades of empty threats, broken agreements and few consequences, creating an environment in which the country’s leadership did not expect significant pressure from the United States.
Rubio said the Trump administration changed that equation by refusing to allow Iran to build the conventional military shield it needed to protect its nuclear ambitions.
According to him, that approach severely degraded Iran’s military capabilities while increasing pressure on Tehran to return to negotiations.
His remarks presented the administration’s position that stronger measures had reshaped the strategic balance between Washington and Tehran.
Iran’s nuclear programme has remained a major issue in international diplomacy for years, with successive United States administrations adopting different strategies in dealing with Tehran.
The issue has involved negotiations, sanctions and broader security concerns, making it one of the most closely watched areas of American foreign policy in the Middle East.
Rubio’s latest comments reflect the Trump administration’s assessment of its approach toward Iran.
He argued that increased pressure and the weakening of Iran’s conventional military capabilities created conditions that encouraged Tehran to negotiate, while maintaining that the administration’s strategy marked a significant departure from previous policies.
