The Benue State Police Command has arrested a young woman for allegedly staging her own kidnapping to extort money from her mother.
Police spokesperson DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu said in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect, Mary Torkuma, was arrested alongside her accomplice, Evergreen Samuel.
The case was reported on July 15, 2026, after Torkuma left her apartment in Akpehe, Makurdi, on July 12 to visit a friend in the North Bank area. The next day, her mother in Lagos received a call from an unknown number claiming her daughter had been kidnapped and demanding ransom.
Operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) traced the suspects to a hotel in the Ankpa Quarters area of Makurdi, where both women were found.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the two conspired to stage the kidnapping to deceive the victim's mother into paying ransom.
The suspects are in police custody as investigations continue.
