UK Minister Calls for FIFA Probe Over Argentina’s Falklands Banner Celebration

A British government minister has called on FIFA to investigate after Argentina’s players displayed a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”) following their 2-1 victory over England.

The incident occurred after the World Cup semi-final and has sparked political controversy, with Business Minister Peter Kyle urging football’s governing body to examine the matter.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Downing Street office backed the call, as the banner references the long-running sovereignty dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas.

The display has reignited debate over whether political messages should have a place in international football, especially during major FIFA tournaments.
