CEUTA, Spain (African News Digest) – Thousands of migrants from Morocco and sub-Saharan African countries attempted to cross into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta overnight, triggering one of the largest border surges in recent years.
The influx caused heavy congestion on roads leading to the border from the Moroccan town of Fnideq, with many migrants attempting to enter Ceuta by land and sea. Spanish authorities said between 2,000 and 3,000 people managed to cross into the territory despite heightened security measures.
In response, the Spanish government deployed additional military troops and police officers to restore order and reinforce border security. Local authorities had requested urgent support as reception facilities became overwhelmed by the sudden arrival of migrants.
The humanitarian situation has worsened, with multiple fatalities reported during the crossing attempts. Many of the migrants, including women and children, were left stranded amid chaotic scenes at the border.
Spanish and Moroccan authorities are continuing efforts to manage the crisis while increasing security along the frontier.
