Promoter of the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), Umar Ardo, has alleged that political calculations ahead of the 2027 general election are driving the ongoing leadership crisis within the association.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Ardo claimed that the dispute extends beyond internal disagreements and is linked to concerns over the future of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). According to him, some politicians are positioning themselves to gain control of ADA because they fear the ADC could encounter legal or political obstacles that may prevent it from participating in the next general election.
Ardo argued that those seeking influence within ADA had already aligned with the ADC but are now looking for an alternative political platform due to uncertainty surrounding the party's future. He claimed they believe ADA could serve as a backup option if the faction associated with David Mark is eventually unable to contest under the ADC.
During the interview, Ardo said, "They know that ADC may not be on the ballot, and they want to take over ADA in case the David Mark faction is put out."
He also defended the leadership changes made by his group, insisting they were carried out in line with the association's constitution and applicable laws. According to him, all relevant documents and notifications regarding the changes were duly submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Ardo further expressed dissatisfaction with the recent judgment of the Federal High Court on the leadership dispute, arguing that the court failed to adequately consider the evidence and arguments presented by his camp before delivering its ruling.
He disclosed that his group has already appealed the judgment and filed an application for a stay of execution, expressing confidence that the Court of Appeal will carefully examine the case and deliver a decision based on the law and the facts presented.
According to Ardo, the legal process remains the most appropriate way to settle the dispute, and he expressed optimism that the appellate court's ruling will determine the legitimate leadership of ADA and bring an end to the controversy.
