Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, has questioned the political consistency of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi, arguing that the former Anambra State governor has departed from positions he once publicly defended.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News on Monday, July 27, 2026, Oshiomhole reflected on Obi's political journey while discussing developments in Nigeria's opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general election. He contended that the former governor's movement across political parties contrasts with commitments he made earlier in his career.
According to Oshiomhole, the Peter Obi who governed Anambra State publicly pledged that he would never leave the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) because of his respect for the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the party's former national leader and a revered Igbo statesman.
The former Edo State governor said Obi had presented that position as a matter of principle and loyalty to Ojukwu's legacy, making it a defining aspect of his political identity at the time.
Recalling Obi's earlier remarks, Oshiomhole said, “The Peter Obi that was Governor of Anambra State is not the Peter Obi of today because the Peter Obi of Anambra was one who said, as a matter of respect to the memory of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, he would never abandon APGA.”
Oshiomhole argued that Obi's subsequent movement to other political parties represented a significant departure from that earlier commitment. According to him, political leaders should be judged not only by the promises they make but also by the consistency with which they uphold those commitments throughout their careers.
He made the comments while assessing the state of opposition politics and the changing alliances among major political figures. The senator maintained that consistency is an important quality in leadership and should form part of the criteria voters use when evaluating those seeking public office.
Peter Obi entered mainstream politics through APGA, the platform on which he was elected governor of Anambra State and served two terms. After leaving APGA, he joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before contesting the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party. He is currently the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
